Aug 16, 2019 NCAA rules have traditionally been heavy-handed on gambling, although it has relaxed its stance in some ways since the legalization of sports betting. Beyond an outright ban on players and university administrators from wagering on games, that also extends to the sharing of information with those who have ties to sports betting. Speaking to reporters Wednesday evening, Nick Saban said they were still researching the rules on coaching a game after testing positive for COVID-19.

It turns out they aren’t favorable for someone hoping to coach a team remotely with No. 3 Georgia visiting Alabama on Saturday.

While he could handle practice duties from home on Zoom on Wednesday, the NCAA rules interpretations prohibit remote coaching on game day.

“Rule 1-4-11-b is very specific and allows only voice communications between the press box and the team area, therefore in (a) the coach could not call into the press box or the sideline for anything related to coaching purposes,” read an NCAA rules interpretation regarding coaches in COVID-19 related isolation written by Steve Shaw, the national coordinator of football officials.

Another rule prohibits the use of technology for coaching that would ban any virtual communication on game day.

“This prohibition would begin at 90 minutes before the scheduled kickoff when the officiating crew assumes jurisdiction of the game and would include the time between periods until the end of the game when the Referee declares the score final,” Shaw’s rule interpretation reads.

Saban said offensive coordinator and former USC head coach Steve Sarkisian would “oversee operations” in the office while he was isolated at his Tuscaloosa-area home. Sarkisian will also continue to call the offensive plays against Georgia, Saban said.

Florida State’s Mike Norvell is a high-profile coach who knows about this situation. The first-year coach tested positive before the Seminoles played Miami in September and his communication with the Seminoles ended when they departed the team hotel for the stadium, The Tallahassee Democrat reported.

“Tonight was extremely challenging,” Norvell was quoted as saying by ESPN after the 52-10 FSU loss to the Hurricanes. “Those are my guys, and to be sitting at home and not being able to have an impact throughout the course of the game, it was a tough night. Even in the tough moments, those are the times I embrace being a coach.”
